Management

Robert Heft, Ph.D., President & Chief Executive Officer
Upon completion of his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986, Dr. Heft joined Continental Pharma Cryosan as its Research Director. Shortly thereafter, he founded IBEX Technologies (Montreal, Quebec) and served as its President until 2001. In 2001, Dr. Heft joined BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. (Novato, California) as Vice-President Product Development, after BioMarin acquired the pharmaceutical assets of IBEX. Dr. Heft joined Enobia as President and CEO in 2005. Dr. Heft has served as a Director of the Industrial Biotechnology Association of Canada, the Canadian Genetic Disease Network and of BioCapital a life-sciences venture fund.
Luc Cournoyer, C.A., Vice-President Finance & Administration
Before joining Enobia Pharma, Mr. Cournoyer was Investment Director – Life Sciences at the Solidarity Fund QFL where he acquired more then eight years of experience in venture capital. Prior to joining the Solidarity Fund QFL in 1995, he held the position of Senior Consultant, Financial Consulting Group, at Raymond, Chabot, Martin, Paré. After his studies, he started his career in Auditing and, as a Team Manager, specialized with the small and medium-sized business in all industry sectors. Mr. Cournoyer holds a B.A. in Business and Administration from the Montreal’s Ecole des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC), he became a Chartered Accountant (C.A.) in 1987 and is a member of the Québec Chartered Accountants Order. Mr. Cournoyer has also served on several life science company’s Board of Directors.
Philippe Crine, Ph.D., Vice-President & Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Crine is a founding shareholder of Enobia. He is also professor of biochemistry at the University of Montreal Medical School and a leading scientist in the field of molecular enzymology and protein engineering. He is a former chairman of the Department of biochemistry and former assistant-dean for medical research at the University of Montreal.
Hal Landy, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Vice-President, Medical Affairs
Dr. Landy is a board certified Pediatric Endocrinologist.  Educated at Harvard College (AB ’72) and Columbia University (MD ’81), he trained in Pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital and performed Fellowships in Adolescent Medicine and Pediatric Endocrinology at Children’s Hospital, Boston.  From 1989 – 1996, Dr. Landy was on staff at Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.  In 1992, he became a Medical Director at Serono Laboratories (Norwell, MA) where he worked on 3 successful NDA submissions before transferring to the Geneva, Switzerland headquarters for 3 years.  Subsequently, Dr. Landy was VP, Medical Affairs at Serono (1999 – 2001).  From 2001 to 2003, he was VP, Clinical Research at Genzyme Corporation (Cambridge, MA) where he oversaw the clinical portion of a successful program in Pompe Disease, a rare, inherited metabolic disease.  From 2003 to 2007, Dr. Landy was VP, Clinical Development, Repligen Corporation (Waltham, MA) where he worked in diverse areas including autism, neuropsychiatric disorders, oncology, rheumatology, neurology, gastroenterology and imaging.
Pierre Léonard, Pharm.D., Vice-President Drug Development & Program Management
In the last 23 years, Dr. Léonard has occupied several senior positions in the pharmaceutical industry including positions in Clinical Research, Business Development and General Management. In those respective areas, Dr. Léonard has been responsible for clinical programs for Canadian and American approval; portfolio management of product opportunities including pre-marketing strategies and launch plans for new products; evaluation of commercial opportunities in Canada and the USA; licensing; strategic planning for a 300M$ business with 650 employees; general management. Dr. Leonard offers a unique understanding of the scientific and commercial aspects of pharmaceutical development and commercialization in both large and small corporate environments. Dr. Léonard received his Doctorate degree in Pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati.
Jayant Aphale, Ph.D., MBA, Vice-President Manufacturing & Process Sciences
Dr. Aphale brings over 16 years of biotechnology industrial experience to the company. His positions of increasing responsibilities have included project management, operations management, upstream / downstream process development, clinical manufacturing, validation, cGMP commercial manufacturing, facility design, regulatory interactions & product launch. In his most recent position Dr. Aphale was responsible for overseeing 3 manufacturing sites and an operations staff of 50. Experiences in small, midsized and large Pharma companies have provided Dr. Aphale a broad perspective from both a product and a contract manufacturing perspective. Dr. Aphale received his Ph. D. from The Ohio State University, his MBA (finance & marketing) from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill & is a certified project management professional as accredited by the Project Management Institute (PMI). He also served as VP Finance for 2 years on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina chapter of PMI.
Julie Anne Smith, Vice-President & Chief Commercial Officer
Ms. Smith has extensive expertise in global commercialization and new product launches. Most recently she was VP, Commercial for Jazz Pharmaceuticals Inc., where she oversaw commercial strategy and operations for marketed and development products. Prior to that she was VP, Global Marketing for Genyzme’s largest therapeutic business unit. At Genzyme she was responsible for the global commercialization of Myozyme®, an enzyme replacement therapy for the rare neuromuscular disorder, Pompe. Ms. Smith was a member of the management team at Novazyme, a biotech company acquired by Genzyme in 2001. Ms. Smith began her marketing career at Bristol-Myers Squibb. She received her Bachelors of Science degree from Cornell University.

Richard Meadows

Richard Meadows is a Managing Partner with CTI Life Sciences Fund and one of its co-founders. He joined the Fund from his previous position as a Venture Partner with VantagePoint Venture Partners, a US$2.8 billion private Equity fund based in San Bruno California. Richard was also a Partner in the Biotechnology Group of CDP Capital Technology Ventures ($1.2 billion). He has extensive experience in operations, general management in biopharmaceuticals, and finance. Richard has made and managed investments in the cancer, cardiovascular, auto-inflammatory and immunology areas. Through these investments, he has represented investors on some 12 Company Boards and counting.

Fredric Price, MBA
Fredric D. Price was elected to our Board of Directors in May 2006. He is currently also Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Peptimmune, Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors and Acting CEO of Chiasma, and a member of the Board of Directors of Pharmasset. In May 2008, he stepped down after 4 years as Chairman of the Board of Omrix Biopharmaceuticals. Previously, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of BioMarin Pharmaceutical. As Chairman and/or CEO, he has raised $500 million in a variety of securities transactions, led a total of 17 M&A and licensing transactions, built FDA approved facilities and had drugs approved in the US as well as in international markets. His earlier experience includes having been President, Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Applied Microbiology, Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, th e founder of the strategy consulting firm RxFDP, and Vice President of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals with both line and staff responsibilities. Mr. Price is a co-inventor of 12 issued U.S. patents and one U.S. patent application. He received a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Thomas J. Schuetz, MD, PhD

Dr. Thomas J. Schuetz has over 8 years of experience leading clinical development programs from Phase 1 through Phase 4 at both public and privately-held biopharmaceutical companies.  Dr. Schuetz was previously the CMO of Therion Biologics Corporation and was the Vice President of Clinical Affairs at Transkaryotic Therapies, Inc. (TKT), where he lead the clinical development of Replagal® for the treatment of Fabry disease and Elaprase® for the treatment of Hunter Syndrome. Dr. Schuetz holds an MD degree from Harvard Medical School, cum laude, and a PhD in Genetics from Harvard University. He did an internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was also Chief Medical Resident, and a Medical Oncology fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, both in Boston. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Jonathan Silverstein, JD, Chairman of the Board
Mr. Silverstein is a General Partner of OrbiMed, as asset management firm solely focused in healthcare with roughly $7 billion in assets under management.  Mr. Silverstein joined OrbiMed in 1998 to focus on private equity and structured transactions in small capitalization public biotechnology and medical device companies. Mr. Silverstein was previously a Director of Life Sciences in the Investment Banking Department at Sumitomo Bank. During his tenure at Sumitomo, he was in charge of strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions in the biotech sector.  Mr. Silverstein has a J.D. and an M.B.A. from the University of San Diego, and a B.A. in Economics from Denison University. Currently, Mr. Silverstein is a Director of Cerapedics, SuperDimension, and Insulet Corporation (PODD).  He has been a former director or observer in an additional dozen companies including: LifeCell (LIFC), Given Imaging (GIVN), Cerexa (sold to Forest Labs), Peninsula Pharmaceuticals (sold to JNJ), Predix (sold to EPIX), Avanir (AVNR), Orthovita (VITA), Auxillium (AUXL), Bioenvision (BIVN), Adiana (sold to Cytyc), and Emphasys Medical.
M. Luc Mainville, President, CEO and Director of LAB Research Inc. (TSX:LRI)
Mr. Mainville is President, CEO and Director of LAB Research Inc. (TSX:LRI), a global contract research organization. During his career, Mr. Mainville has held executives positions for various private and public companies including LAB International Inc., URRMA Biopharma, RTP Pharma and Waratah Pharmaceuticals which he co-founded and brought public in 2000. Previous to 1998, Mr. Mainville was Senior Vice President and Partner in the corporate finance group of KPMG. Mr. Mainville holds an MBA degree as well as Bachelor’s degree in Finance. Mr. Mainville is also member of the Board of Directors of Cyplasin Biomedical (NASDAQ:CYPL) and Power Tech Corporation (TSXV:PWB).

T2C2 (Technology, Transfer, Commercialisation, Capital) has the mission to identify in Universities, Research Centres and Industry, business opportunities and turn them into real businesses. T2C2 gets involved in the seed phase to support the continuation of the research and to develop the business engineering of the project.
